breathing life into the mac mini

TL:DR. it is now not running macOS and I have 16GB of RAM inside it.

If you’e been here before you know I have a 2012 Mac mini server.
It’s pretty old now and I’ve been meaning to do something about it. I wasn’t sure what that would be but after a little research, rather than buy a small NUC box I decided to reuse the Mac and install proxmox.

The great thing about the server edition is that it was the last of the quad core Intels that apple put in the Mac mini and had hyper threading so proxmox can see 8 cpus to play with!

I’ve been experimenting with various LXC and containers and things to run.

I currently have a 3cx phone service running to give me VOIP landline to my mobile via an app (I’m looking to go to an actual physical phone soon)

I have a docker VM running various experiments including the cloudflare tunnel.

I have a been using Kubenetes at work and want to have a homelab setup so I’m working out the best way to do that. I was following along a tutorial spinning up the infrastructure with terraform but I might go down the k3 route.

I have my plex server running. This was fun dealing with formatting and mounting the internal HDD – I may have to revisit that as I think I got it wrong. It’s working but looks a bit odd.

I was thinking about moving my unifi setup back in-house, so I might look into that, or I might leave it in Google cloud. It costs me about 5p a month to run in the cloud!

Also had to figure out how to get it to auto start on a power failure. I’ll find the link and pop it here.

Anyway. It is great and I love the fact my 11 year old computer is running really well and giving me so much fun.
